Hello! I’m Michael Serpell
I am a social impact storyteller, filmmaker, media consultant, and mentor based in Melbourne, Australia — a city that first shaped my love for community and connection through its cultural gatherings, entertainment, and sporting scene. Growing up surrounded by iconic events and passionate supporters, I learned early that storytelling had the power to unite people from all walks of life.
My call to action was nurtured from a young age through volunteering with the Aussie Hands Foundation, a non-profit organisation my parents founded in the early 2000s when my brother was born with a hand difference. The foundation supports children, adults, and families living with hand differences, and I’ve been deeply influenced by its mission of inclusion, empathy, and hope.
That passion continued when I travelled to Laos and Cambodia with World Challenge in 2014, volunteering at an orphanage and witnessing firsthand the resilience of communities rising from the generational trauma of the Pol Pot regime. This experience awakened in me a determination to tell stories that matter.
Two years later, as a first-year Media & Communications student at RMIT University, I joined Actuality Abroad’s Documentary Outreach Program in Guatemala — my first experience in global documentary filmmaking. There, I created Cada Gota Cuenta (Every Drop Counts), a mini documentary about EcoFiltro, a social enterprise bringing clean water to rural families. Their mission taught me that storytelling can save lives, and in the words of CEO Philip Wilson: “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”
Between 2017 and 2023, I returned to South-East Asia several times with my father and grandfather — to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia — volunteering at an orphanage called Friends of Hue Foundation, teaching various programs, and learning from the children about their joy and connections to their vibrant community. Each journey deepened my compassion and shaped my creative inspirations.
During my time at RMIT University (2019–2024), I founded and directed the nationally recognised RMIT Sports Media Program, where, as Digital Engagement Officer, I mentored students and created hands-on opportunities to capture multimedia at live sporting events on campus and interstate. That initiative demonstrated how storytelling can inspire belonging both on and off the field. This experience led to a role in professional baseball in the United States, where I helped build a community around a new team through creative marketing campaigns, storytelling, and local engagement — uniting fans and residents under the Northern Californian spirit of “Your Team, Your Community, Your Backyard.”
In 2025, I returned to Mexico and Guatemala, this time as Program Supervisor for Actuality Abroad’s Documentary Outreach Program. Guiding international filmmakers alongside my mentor, Robin Canfield, was a full-circle moment — from student to teacher, creator to facilitator. Seeing our cohort’s films premiere in a packed local theatre in the heart of San Miguel de Allende confirmed what I had always believed: stories told with integrity create genuine community impact and connection.
Today, my focus lies in helping people and organisations amplify the good they bring to their communities through film, podcasts, and visual storytelling. My work spans nonprofits, social enterprises, and educational institutions, with a mission to make storytelling accessible, authentic, and transformational.
Through positivity, creativity, humour, faith, and heart-led collaboration, I hope to continue uniting like-minded people around the world — turning stories into movements that spark hope, connection, and change.
